Yes, there's an alternative to PGTG, Freepops allows you to have one or multiple Gmail accounts within your e-mail client using the POP3 protocol. You can find it there: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=105652 Be sure to take the SSL version.
You also need the special plugin for Gmail I attached as I can't remember where I downloaded it from (config.lua in root directory and gmail.lua in LUA sub-folder).
Once Freepops is installed with its plugin(don't forget to put a shorcut to it in the start menu 'startup' folder), the account(s) setup is quite easy:
user: user@gmail.com (yes, full address)
password: your.password
POP3 server: localhost
Smtp server: your.isp.smtp
Advanced tab:
Incoming (POP3): port 2000
SSL: unchecked
